Detoxing twice a year is a good rule of thumb. I want my body working at its best, especially while I am working my body hard to reach my personal fitness goals. I want all systems in my body working optimally for me. The detox that I undergo is the same one that I teach. It is 7 days long…long enough to cleanse but not too long to cause harm to the body.
The rules are simple:
Never starve yourself…feeling hunger is not the goal.
Eat clean, eat often and eat small.
Drink water throughout the day. A minimum of 8-8oz of water per day is required. Partake in drinking hot water with lemon; especially first thing in the morning. The benefits of this simple drink are boundless.
Rest….sleep is extremely important for the cleansing and repairing of internal organs.
Limit physical activity to avoid injury.
Eat endless amounts of raw vegetables; especially the dark colored vegetables and leafs.
Limit fruit to 2 to 3 servings per day.
Completely remove any carbohydrates, sugars, and fats from your diet during the detox.
Avoid eating protein. If this is not possible limit protein to 3 to 4 oz. Avoid cooking with butter, oil, or any types of fats…boiling is the best form of cooking.
The goal is to cleanse your body through the purging of buildup waste. Depending on your lifestyle, size and commitment, the amount of purged waste will vary. On average people lose between 7 to 10 lbs through this detox. I lost 5lbs on my last 7 day-detox. I was successful because my refrigerator was prepped and ready to go. Snacks were cut and easy to access. I had a nice stocky vegetable soup to alternate between salads. And I had my fiber supplements and my water bottles ready to go.
